Hughes Unit Eyes Two-Way DirecPC

Los Angeles-Hughes Network Systems said last Friday that it would add two-way broadband capabilities to its DirecPC satellite-data service in the fourth quarter.

The company will keep serving DirecPC customers who use telephone-return paths, and it will offer hardware upgrades to subscribers who wish to add the new, uplink-capable satellite dishes needed to access the two-way service. Details were not announced.

The company plans to announce pricing for the hardware and the monthly service sometime this summer, and expects it to be competitive with services such as cable modems and digital subscriber lines.
