IFC said Tuesday (March 31) it has ordered a new scripted comedy, Benders, which will join the network’s original programming line-up later this year.
Formerly in development as Uncle Chubby’s, the series is about several friends who share an irrational obsession for their beer-swilling, amateur hockey league. Apostle, the production company headed by Jim Serpico, Tom Sellitti and Denis Leary, is producing Benders, with all three execs serving as executive producers. Serpico and Sellitti will also write the show.
Apostle's Leary, Serpico and Sellitti also serve as executive producers for IFC's Maron, an original comedy that returns to the network on May 14 for its third season.
IFC has ordered eight half-hour episodes of Benders. Production is scheduled to begin this spring.
“Benders is exactly the type of fresh, original comedy that complements our existing programming slate," Jennifer Caserta, IFC’s president, said. "We’re also excited to continue our relationship with Apostle; they have been a great creative partner for us on Maron.”
Benders joins IFC’s growing roster of new and returning scripted comedies slated for 2015, which in addition to Maron include Portlandia, Comedy Bang! Bang!, The Spoils Before Dying, American Documentary (wt) and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret.
