Chicago— Two suburban communities here have approved a ballot measure to gauge citizen support for a tri-city municipal cable overbuild.
The Geneva and St. Charles, Ill., city councils voted Jan. 21 to place the issue on the ballot next April. Batavia, Ill., scheduled a special meeting on the topic for Jan. 27. Batavia assistant city manager Randy Recklaus said he expects the measure to head to the community's municipal ballot as well.
Voters will decide whether their respective cities should be part of a three-city consortium that's building a $62 million telecommunications plant, using some infrastructure from the local electric utilities.
If the telecommunications project is approved and created, the resulting cable system would compete against Comcast Corp.
