Insight Communications Co. Inc. said it is adding 1 megabit per second of speed to high-speed Internet services.
The basic Insight Broadband rises to 256 Kilobits per second for uploads and 4 Mbps for downloads, from 128 Kbps and 3Mbps (since February 2002).
Insight Broadband Plus, a tier with more uploading capacity (appealing for multiplayer gaming), will see download speeds rise to 4 Mbps from 3Mbps while the upstream capacity remains at 384Kbps.
The upgrades automatically take effect the first week of September at no extra cost. Insight Broadband starts as low as $34.95 a month, as part of a bundle, and Broadband Plus costs $79.
Insight Broadband’s portal (Insightbb.com) recently re-launched with expanded content from such providers as Travelocity, CareerBuilder.com, and The Weather Channel. Security software, including personal firewalls, anti-virus protection, and parental and spam controls, and Web mail are also now available to customers.
Additional speed increases and portal enhancements are currently being evaluated, Insight said.
Insight has about 1.3 million customers in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.
