Kasenna Addresses Broadband Video

Mountain View, Calif.-Claiming the sheer size of broadband video files makes traditional delivery methods technologically impractical,Kasenna Inc.has launched its new "Video Content Distribution" (VCD) software, designed to optimize and distribute broadband streaming-video applications. According to Kasenna, the software boosts the scalability and cost-effectiveness of Internet performance techniques used by companies such asAkamaiandInktomi.

To do that, Kaseena VCD uses "metadata distribution" and "prefix caching" methods, which eliminate replication of all video content from the network core to edge servers, the company said. For example, a small portion of the video stored at the edge server enables it to stream video to viewers immediately, while the metadata fetches the rest of the video from central servers as required.
