Former Charter Communications Inc. CEO Jerry Kent's CEQUEL III investment
firm is one of several parties considering making a run at the 80,000
subscribers owned by Alliance Communications.

Alliance, which is managed by R&A Management (formerly Rifkin &
Associates Inc.), has systems in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois,
Indiana and southeast Missouri.

Last week, Kent's firm beefed up its cable expertise with the hiring of
former Charter vice president Bill Shreffler and former Charter executives
Andrew Stewart and S. Tyler Nau.

Kent, who declined to comment on Alliance, said the hires weren't tied to any
specific deals.

"It's no secret that we've been looking at cable. We're always looking for
good management," added Kent, who has denied speculation that he wants to make a
run at acquiring Paul Allen's Charter.

The Alliance systems need work. With most of the properties in need of
upgrades, some cable executives have estimated that they are worth between $500
and $800 per subscriber.
