Fans are voting now on a nickname for that great National Hockey League rivalry in the Los Angeles area – and "Freeway Face-off" is the early leader.
Yes, it's that regional faceoff between the Los Angeles Kings and the 2007 Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks. FSN West (Kings) and FSN Prime Ticket (Ducks) figured the six games the bitter rivals play each year merited a moniker along the lines of New York's Subway Series. So they asked fans to submit their selections online.
The first phase of the contest got started Sept. 29, the same day the Kings defeated the Ducks, 4-1, on neither team's ice: the match was played at the O2 Arena in London, England. The teams split a pair of matches by 4-1 scores, the NHL's first-ever games in London.
A very long list of entries were winnowed down to four. Freeway Face-off, Freezeway Series, Ice-5 Series and Crosstown Showdown.
A select list of losing entries included: The Los Angeles Rivalry of Anaheim; The California Goal Rush; Sig Alert Series (one of many playing off how long it takes to drive the 30 miles from L.A. to Anaheim, as Sig Alerts are what local traffic reporters call major traffic delays); Battle for the Kings of the Pond; San Andreas Classic; Seismic Slam and "Ducking Awesome!"
Eliminated because of trademark concerns: "The Commotion By The Ocean," FSN's Jennifer Johnson told us.

And here's an update about the contest rules: The Name the Rivalry contest submission period has been extended through Tuesday, Oct. 30. On Wednesday, Oct. 31, the top names will be announced, beginning a five-day voting period. The Name the Rivalry contest winner will be announced on Nov. 13, when the Ducks host the Kings in Anaheim.
