L.A. Loads Up vs. Adelphia

The Los Angeles City Council Friday agreed to hire a high-powered law firm to
represent the municipality in the Adelphia Communications Corp. bankruptcy.

A $150,000 contract was approved for the firm of Mannatt, Phelps &
Phillips LLP. City officials said the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern
District of New York, which oversees the operations of the cable company,
recently spurned attempts by the city to collect fees it believes it is due.

Last fall, Adelphia notified many cities that it would not pay some
obligations, such as public-access-support payments, citing instructions from
the court.
