The war continues: Six weeks after facing a patent-infringement lawsuit
from OpenTV Corp., Liberate Technologies has filed a countersuit alleging that
its rival violated several crucial patents on interactive-television
technologies.

The Liberate suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Northern California, seeks
damages and an injunction barring OpenTV from using the disputed technology.

Specifically, Liberate claimed that Mountain View, Calif.-based OpenTV has
infringed on four patents related to addressable multimedia presentations,
interactive-television transactions, data multiplexing and streaming and
management systems.

'While we have previously not asserted our patent portfolio against other
companies, we view this countersuit as a measured and necessary response to
OpenTV's resort to litigation,' Liberate senior vice president for corporate and
legal affairs Kent Walker said in a prepared statement.
