George C. Hatch, an early partner with Bob Magness in cable operations that grew to become Tele-Communications Inc., was subject of a Salt Lake Tribune editorial after he died Sunday at age 89.

The newspaper ranked Hatch among the "farsighted Utahns" for early investments in radio and television broadcasting, but noted he and partners formed a cable television operation in Elko, Nev., in 1956 that later grew to become TCI, at one time the nation's largest cable operator. In an oral history at the Cable Center, Magness said Hatch was a founding director of TCI while also a strong advocate of broadcasters.
