LodgeNet to Use Macrovision Copy Protection

LodgeNet Entertainment Corp. reached a multiyear deal to use Macrovision Corp.’s technology to copy-protect movies on its in-room video-on-demand service.

Macrovision's technology can be used to protect movies distributed via digital-video file servers and VHS-cassette-based systems.

The system allows consumers to transparently view original VOD and VHS programming, but prevents unauthorized copying on DVD recorders and significantly distorts unauthorized copies made with VCRs and D-VHS recorders, Macrovision said.

In addition, the majority of hard-drive recorders and home-media-center PCs recognize Macrovision's technology and disable recording of copy-protected content, the vendor added.
