Cable nemesis Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), author of the 1992
cable-reregulation law, has agreed to give the luncheon address Tuesday at the
American Cable Association's annual "Washington Summit."
A decade ago, small operators suffered under Markey's rate-regulation law,
but today, they are looking to Markey for help in the battle to restrain higher
programming fees imposed by media conglomerates.
"More than being a policy maker on telecommunications, [Markey] is a policy
shaper," ACA president Matt Polka said in a prepared statement Sunday. "That's
why we appreciate and take very seriously the dialogue we are able to have with
him on our ACA members' concerns."
