WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather will face power-punching WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana in a May 3 mega pay-per-view fight from Las Vegas.
The Showtime-distributed unification fight will pit the undefeated, PPV pound-for-pound champion Mayweather against the veteran Maidana, who last December upsetformer welterweight champion and Mayweather protégé Adrien Broner in a majority decision win.
The fight will be Showtime’s third featuring Mayweather as part of the network’s six-fight deal with the fighter. Showtime's Sept. 14 Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez fight (pictured) drew a PPV event record $150 million in revenue.
“The first two events in our partnership with Floyd Mayweather were incredible and Showtime PPV is proud to present the next chapter in Floyd’s remarkable career,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Showtime Sports in a statement. “Marcos Maidana is a boxer whose fearsome power can change the trajectory of a fight with a single punch. Couple that with his ferocity and perseverance and you have the recipe for an incredible fight on the grandest stage of the sport.”
The Mayweather-Maidana fight rounds out a big first half of 2014 for PPV boxing, which also includes HBO’s recently announced June 7 Sergio Martinez-Miguel Cotto fight, the network’s April 12 Manny Pacquiao-Tim Bradley bout and Showtime’s March 8 Canelo Alvarez- Alfredo Angulo event.
