Md. Axes 'Energy Vampire' Regulation

Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich has vetoed a bill
that would have applied state-specific energy standards to home
electronics.

Such bills were promoted in several Eastern
states by public-interest research groups, which brand such consumer electronics
"energy vampires."

Opponents argued that the federal Energy Star
program more appropriately addresses power conservation.

Cable-hardware references were amended out of
the current bill, but the legislation called for further study of set-tops and
modems, which could have led to future
regulation.
