Md. Axes 'Energy Vampire' Regulation

Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich has vetoed a bill
that would have applied state-specific energy standards to home
electronics.

Such bills were promoted in several eastern
states by public interest research groups which brand such consumer electronics
'energy vampires.'

Opponents argued that the federal Energy Star
program more appropriately addresses power conservation.

Cable hardware references were amended out of
the current bill, but the legislation called for further study of set-tops and
modems, which could have lead to future
regulation.
