Mediacom Helps Iowa Students Earn GEDs On Demand

Iowans can study to earn their General Education Development diploma at home, thanks to a partnership including Mediacom Communications, the Iowa Department of Education, local community colleges and the state's public television station.

According to Mediacom, the operator delivers video services to 300 Iowa communities. Adults using GED on Demand can choose from 39 learning modules that provide instruction in science, math, social studies, reading and writing—all of which are official GED test areas. Mediacom will offer discounted digital set-top boxes to non-digital subscribers who wish to participate in the study program.

"From an economic perspective, we want to encourage adults of all ages who, for a range of reasons, did not finish high school. GED on Demand helps them close that gap from the comfort of their own homes, and in doing so, they will likely see a substantial increase in their weekly wages and personal incomes," said Ed Pardini, Mediacom senior vice president.

Iowa Public Television will also telecast series designed to give adult students the information they need to pass the GED and improve workplace skills.

Iowa First Lady Mari Culver estimated that 290,000 Iowans are eligible to take advantage of the GED study help.
