MobiTV, provider of live and on-demand TV and for mobile devices, said consumers viewed a record 167 million minutes of mobile television on MobiTV-powered services during September 2011, with live programming representing 65% of minutes viewed.
MobiTV filed for a $75 million initial public offering last month.
The company is the exclusive national provider of mobile TV services for AT&T U-verse Live TV, NFL Mobile on Verizon, Sprint TV and T-Mobile TV. MobiTV delivers more than 220 channels of video -- including 75 live channels -- with content licensed from ABC, CBS, Disney, ESPN, Fox, MTV Networks, NBC and others.
"This milestone validates our technical platform and our focus on delivering live television optimized for mobile devices," MobiTV CEO Charlie Nooney said in a statement. "Last month's data further demonstrates our operational excellence as we continue to deliver high-quality content and support live events across multiple networks, devices, and operating systems."
For the full year 2010, MobiTV delivered 1.4 billion minutes of video.
Other mobile TV services have failed to gain traction. Qualcomm last year shut down its FLO TV service after signing up fewer than 1 million subscribers, and sold the spectrum licenses the service had used to AT&T for $1.9 billion.
Emeryville, Calif.-based MobiTV, founded in 2000, is unprofitable. Revenue for 2010 was $66.8 million with a net loss of $15.2 million, according to its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In the first half of 2011, MobiTV generated $37.0 million in sales with a net loss of $8.2 million. The company had an accumulated deficit of approximately $116.3 million as of June 30, 2011.
The company delivers content across more than 375 different types of mobile devices, including those based on Google Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile.
