Where the Nielsens were concerned, Fox News Channel easily led the way among cable news networks with President Bush’s State of the Union address Tuesday night.
From the start of the Jan. 20 address at 9 p.m. (EST) through commentary and analysis at 11 p.m., Fox News averaged a 3.4 rating and 2.9 million households, versus a 1.7 rating and 1.5 million households for Cable News Network, according to Nielsen Media Research data. MSNBC was third with a 0.6 and 480,000 households.
From a viewership perspective, Fox News captured the gaze of 4.45 million, compared with 1.97 million for CNN and 721,000 for MSNBC.
During Bush’s address from 9 p.m.-10:05 p.m., Fox News, with a 3.9, again almost doubled CNN’s 2.0. MSNBC lagged behind with a 0.6 during the speech.
