Motive Communications Inc. wants to motivate home networking in broadband
homes and it claimed that it has the first-ever automated-management and support
product to help providers offer it.
The Austin, Texas-based software provider is debuting the 'Home Networking
Service Solution,' which it will market to broadband providers, Internet-service
providers, retailers and warranty-service companies.
Using the software package, these companies can offer managed home-networking
services to consumers.
The motivation? Analysts such as In-Stat/MDR (a sister company to
Multichannel News), which predicted that revenues for home networking
will hit $3.5 billion by 2004.
Unlike other products that only cover individual components, Motive claimed

That includes installation software to configure PCs, modems and routers. It
also contains diagnostics for the user to track down problems, and it sends
information to the network provider if the customer needs technical support to
solve a problem.
In addition, the software covers home-network management, including how to
set up virtual private networks or gaming services, as well as sharing
'Home networking is the next step in the evolution of home technology from
single PC to broadband-connected PC to interconnected devices,' Motive vice
president of marketing Anna Clepper said in a release.
'The launch of our Home Networking Service Solution takes this model to the
next level by enabling intelligent service for the increasing number of
networked homes,' she added.
