Motorola Mobility is introducing a 1-GHz optical node module that fits into the vendor's existing housings for legacy 750 MHz and 870 MHz nodes, designed to let MSOs more easily boost hybrid fiber-coax network capacity.
The VSN200 2x2 optical node provides operators a 1-GHz upgrade and segmentation solution for their installed base of Motorola SG2000 and SG2440 legacy node locations. According to Motorola, the VSN200's design lets operators can repurpose existing housings using only an Electronics Package (E-Pack) and lid swap, so they don't have to replace the entire node to make the upgrade.
"We will continue our relentless focus on innovating optics and network technology to empower our customers to meet increasing consumer demand for more video and connectivity across all of their screens," Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president and general manager for Motorola Mobility's Network Infrastructure Solutions business, said in a statement.
The VSN200 features enhanced gallium-nitride components that provide high RF output levels, which make it suited for deployment as a fiber-deep satellite node, according to Motorola. The product is in lab trials with cable operator customers and is currently shipping.
Motorola plans to show the VSN200 Optical Node as part of its portfolio of Broadband Access Networks products at the 2012 Cable Show 2012 in Boston May 21-23.
