Motorola's Mobile Devices Chief Joins Dell

Motorola announced Friday that Ron Garriques, president of its Mobile Devices business unit, resigned.

In a separate announcement Friday, Dell said Garriques will join the PC maker as head of its newly created Global Consumer Organization, reporting to CEO Michael Dell.

Motorola said the Mobile Devices unit will be temporarily headed by two executives: Ray Roman, senior vice president of global sales, and Terry Vega, senior VP of global devices.

Last month, after reporting what CEO Ed Zander called "unacceptable" results for the fourth quarter of 2006, Motorola said it would lay off 3,500 employees, or about 5% of its work force.

Motorola’s fourth-quarter net income fell 48% compared with the year before. Analysts attributed the drop to lower average selling prices for its mobile handsets, even as sales in the segment rose 19% to $7.8 billion.
