Movie-download service Movielink (www.movielink.com) has landed a distribution
deal with Buena Vista Pay Television to make movies from The Walt Disney Co.
available online for the first time.
The deal includes new releases and certain library titles from Walt Disney
Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Miramax Films and Dimension Films. The first
titles to be released will include Chicago, Gangs of New York,
The Recruit and Frida.
The Disney deal brings Movielink’s studio-partner count to six and expands
its catalog to 400 titles. When Movielink launched eight months ago, its library
consisted of just 175 titles.
"Our relationship with Movielink opens the door to exciting new territory,"
said Dan Cohen, senior vice president and general manager of Buena Vista Pay TV,
in a release.
"This deal paves the way for today's Internet-savvy audience, providing
unprecedented access to our movies aboard a high-quality and secure Internet
site, and is part of Disney's overall strategy to make digital content available
in a convenient manner for a customer-friendly price," he added.
Movielink offers movie downloads costing between $2.95 and $4.99 per title,
which broadband users can download for up to 30 days. Once a video file is
opened, it can be repeatedly viewed in a 24-hour period.
