MTV: Music Television will be able to drop music videos from Warner Music Group artists to wireless-phone customers around the world as part of a long-term content deal between the two companies, announced Monday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Executives from both companies said the agreement will allow MTV’s various wireless brands to create and distribute short-form music-video content for mobile devices from such Warner music artists as Sean Paul, Twista and Green Day.
MTV is the first media company to secure such video rights from Warner to create original programming for the wireless space, according to the company.
MTV has local distribution deals with Verizon Wireless and Sprint Corp., as well as several wireless distributors in Europe and Japan. Each carrier will determine the pricing and the packages for the content, which can range from a la carte purchases to subscription offerings. MTV and Warner will share in revenues generated from wireless purchases, the programmer said.
“This a great leap forward in the evolution of our mobile-video strategy, and we look forward to developing more exciting initiatives in this space over the year to come,” MTV Networks chairman Judy McGrath said in a prepared statement.
