News Corp. scored a major coup in India last week when it secured rights to the extremely popular World Cup cricket games in 2003 to 2007 for its Star TV and ESPN Star channels. The company is part of the World Sports Group consortium, which also includes the Australian media mogul Kerry Packer and India's Harish Thiwani (who owns Nimbus, a TV-software company). The International Cricket Council decided in WSG's favor even though its $370 million bid was $30 million less than one from Trans World International.
