The Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control Wednesday approved a plan by the city of Groton to launch cable service in five area towns, according to local newspaper The Day

The municipal system would compete against incumbent Comcast Corp.

The DPUC ruling will allow Groton Utilities -- which will be doing business as Thames Valley Communications Inc. -- to operate a cable-TV service in Groton, Ledyard, Stonington, North Stonington and Voluntown, Conn.
