Nat Geo, Times Join Forces for Weekly Show

LOS ANGELES -The National Geographic Channel and
The New York Times

will team up to produce
Science Times
, a weekly primetime newsmagazine set to debut on the new network in June, officials said last week.

The program will bear the same name as the newspaper's weekly Tuesday science section.

The two-year partnership calls for 26 episodes of the hour-long series.
The Times

also will provide promotional advertising in its "Science Times" section.

The newspaper section has 50 dedicated reporters who will sometimes appear on
Science Times

to offer commentary.

The magazine show will examine how science affects people's daily lives and follow scientists at work as they reveal their latest discoveries. Episodes will include three long-form stories.

At a Western Show press conference, New York Times Television Enterprises managing director Christian Gwinn said
Science Times

would be "character driven" and "story driven," and not merely the newspaper's printed science section brought to television.

National Geographic Channel, which launches Jan. 7, has also named two anchors for its live daily news show,
National
Geographic Today

. They are former ABC News correspondent Tom Foreman and news anchor Susan Roesgen, who was most recently with WDSU-TV in New Orleans.

National Geographic Channel, owned by National Geographic Television and Fox Cable Networks Group, will initially launch with 10 million subscribers. It has commitments for 25 million in total.
