Three games in, the NBA Finals ranks as the most-watched ever on ABC.
With Sunday's night Game 3 in which Miami took a 2-1 lead over Oklahoma City averaging an 8.8 household rating and nearly 15.5 million viewers, ABC's first three telecasts have averaged almost 16.1 million watchers, according to Nielsen data.
Additionally, the series to date is up 7% in household rating -- 9.7 vs. 9.1 -- and 5% in viewership from 15.3 million for the first three games of Heat-Dallas Mavericks. The 9.7 three-game average is the highest since 2004, when ABC aired what turned out to a five-game title tilt in which the Detroit Pistons topped the Los Angeles Lakers.
ABC began covering the NBA Finals in 2003 after a 30-year hiatus.
