NBC Olympics is looking to put NBCSN on the medal stand, as the national cable network will present some 230 hours from Sochi, including unprecedented coverage of the Winter Games most popular event, figure skating.
NBCSN, which counts 80 million subscribers, is scheduled to provide upward of 230 hours of Winter Olympics fare, the most ever for a U.S. cable network. In addition, NBC Olympics is looking to raise the channel's profile and ratings by scheduling myriad figure skating events live over 10 days in February. The network’s coverage will encompass the performance of the first skater to those in the final group, including the men’s and women’s short programs.
Continuing its evolution to become the primary linear cable outlet for NBC Olympics, the service, which jumped into the Olympic ring for the first time last summer with more than 290 hours from the London Games, will feature the most coverage from the competition days at Sohci, while again serving as the cable home of Team USA, a position previously held by USA Network. Along those lines, NBCSN will showcase three games apiece from the U.S. men’s and women’s hockey teams.
Moreover, NBCSN, in addition to its extensive figure skating and ice hockey coverage, will feature action from eight other sports, notably live gold medal coverage of events in bobsled, Nordic combined, cross-country skiing, speed skating, and ski jumping, including the women, who will their debut at this event in Sochi.
NBCSN will complement the Olympic programming airing on NBC, the details of which will be released shortly, as well as cable cousins CNBC, which will carry 36 hours of curling competition, MSNBC, hosting 45 hours of live curling and hockey, including medal rounds, and USA, serving 43 hours of live curling and hockey coverage, including medal rounds. Digitally, NBCOlympics.com will live-stream 1,000, the bulk of which will be made available only to authenticated MPVD customers.
From the figure skating arena, NBCSN viewers will gain unparalleled access to the competitions as the service becomes the first cable channel to air coverage of one of the Winter Games’ signature sports. NBC’s live figure skating presentations had been limited to the more prominent competitors and to viewers in the Eastern and Central time zone viewers for its coverage from the Salt Lake City Games in 2002 and the Vancouver quadrennial in 2010 (all of the figure skating action from Torino in 2006 was on tape). The Peacock plans to air its traditional, packaged figure skating presentations from Sochi in primetime.
NBCSN’s live figure skating coverage begins Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9:30 a.m.( ET) with the team event, which makes its Olympic debut in Sochi. The event will be featured prominently in NBCSN’s first weekend of coverage and pits six-member, national teams against each other in every figure skating discipline: one male, one female, one pair and one ice dance couple. The men’s short and free competitions are slated for Feb. 13 and Feb. 14 at 10 a.m., respectively, while the ladies short and free are set for Feb. 19 and Feb. 20 at that time. (Check out a full schedule below.)
The network will present 16 men’s live hockey games through the bronze medal game, including qualifying, playoff, quarterfinal and semifinal games. The puck drops on live men’s hockey medal-round coverage on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 3 a.m. Three Team USA qualifying-round games are on tap.
On the distaff side of the blue line, NBCSN will air seven live games through the semifinal round and the bronze medal game. Qualifying-round coverage is highlighted by three Team USA contests. (See the hockey schedules below.)
