More than one-third of total viewers in the Boston DMA were tuned into NESN’s simultaneous coverage of Boston Red Sox and Bruins games last weekend.
NESN and NESN plus aired coverage of Red Sox and Bruins games on the afternoons of Saturday April 21 and 22, delivering big Nielsens in the area from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on both days.
On Saturday, the Red Sox-Kansas City game drew a 9.4 rating/23 share in the Boston DMA, while the Bruins/Pittsburgh contest netted a 4.7 rating and 12 share on NESN plus, according to Nielsen data. Combined, the NESN telecasts garnered a 14.0/35 share as Bostonians tried to regain some sense of normalcy following the Boston Marathon bombings and subsequent manhunt.
The following day the Sox-Royals matchup averaged a 10.3 rating and 26 share, as the Bruins-Florida Panthers contest skated to a 4.1 rating/11 share. Together, NESN and NESN plus claimed a 14.4 rating/37 share in that four-hour window.
New England’s top RSN will provide simultaneous coverage three more times in the days ahead: tonight’s Sox-Oakland and Bruins-Philadelphia contests; April 25’s Sox-Houston and Bruins-Tampa Bay games; and April 27’s Sox-Astros and Bruins-Washington matchups.
NESN completes its regular-season coverage of the Bruins on April 28, when the club hosts the Ottawa Senators at TD Garden. That contest was rescheduled from April 15 in the wake of the Boston Marathon tragedy.
