Next Level Communications is unveiling an ultra-compact
universal-services-access multiplexer that it said will make it easier for
telcos to add very high data-rate digital-subscriber-line (VDSL) video service
without having to strip out and replace existing equipment.
The carrier-grade, 50-pound USAM single-shelf enclosure can be bolted
alongside existing telco cabinets that are already providing voice and data
service. That avoids having to completely replace the remote unit to provide
voice, video and data, according to Next Level director of marketing services
'Rather than deploying a huge, big cabinet or something like that, you can
actually deploy the full-service bundle on one of these smaller enclosures,' he
The unit lists for about $3,500, and it is now in trials with various Next
Level customers. It is expected to be in limited availability in November and in
full availability in 2003.
