Nextel Communications Inc., which signed a hefty sponsorship contract with
the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing last month, announced
Wednesday that it has also become an official sponsor and exclusive wireless
provider of the Gold Cup soccer tournament.
Nextel made the announcement in conjunction with Univision Communications
Inc., the Spanish-language network that will carry coverage of the largest North
American soccer tourney. Univision and sister network Galavisión will cover the
event July 12-27. The Gold Cup is played every two years.
Nextel said its involvement will encompass advertising, in-stadium signage,
wireless content and online activities.
Consumers, for instance, will be able to sign up via their Nextel Web browser
or Univision.com (www.univision.com/portal.jhtml)
to receive scoring alerts for their favorite teams or enter to win a VIP package
to attend the 2004 EuroCup in Lisbon, Portugal, Nextel said.
