National Geographic Channel recently became very familiar with California Sacramento State Prison.
The network said Monday that it will debut Explorer: Surviving Maximum Security Sunday, April 10 at 8 p.m. (EST/PST).
Explorer host Lisa Ling was given rare access to the prison, where she found “a culture unto itself: divided by race, controlled by force and always on the edge of chaos,” the network said in a release.
During the special, Ling chronicles challenges faced by guards, investigative officers and inmates and, in interviews with newcomers and “lifers,” she reports how they survive the “dangerous world of gangs and predators.”
“We give a view into a violent, dark underbelly of the prison system, and I think it is a haunting journey that will surprise viewers," Ling said in a prepared statement. "Our cameras capture the daily tensions out in the yard, where every day, there is a risk that it will explode into violence, and we see unique inmate rituals rarely caught on film.”
