Nick Back on Top of Cable's Total-Day Viewership


After having its 17-year run end in March at the hands of Disney Channel, Nickelodeon returned to its familiar perch atop cable's total-day with total viewers in April. For its part, Disney Channel once again claimed the top spot with kids 2-11 in the full-day measure.

During April (March 26 through April 30), Nickelodeon and Disney Channel both averaged a 0.6 rating int total day, but the former posted a narrow victory, averaging 1.57 million viewers, compared with 1.52 million for its rival, according to Nielsen data.

In March, the results were reversed: the networks were tied with 0.6 marks, but Disney tallied more watchers for the first time with 1.57 million, versus 1.54 million for Nick, according to Nielsen. As such, Disney ended Nick's 17-year run as the most-watched basic-cable network in the total-day measure.

April's Nielsen race was shaped by Nickelodeon's 25th Annual Kids' Choice Awards. Hosted by Will Smith, the March 31 telecast ranked as basic-cable's best for the month with 6.9 million viewers. April also saw the premiere of Nick's animated series The Legend of Korra, which closed the month as the medium''s top kids' program among total viewers.

As to the battle for the 2-to-11 set, Disney Channel extended its winning streak to two months. The network notched a 2.5 rating against the demo and 871,000 of those viewers on average in total day, versus a 2.4 and 835,000 for Nick during April.

The previous month, Disney Channel, which had been narrowing the gap considerably over the last year, finally pushed past Nick, recording a 2.6 total-day cable rating and 892,000 2-to-11 watchers. That compared favorably with a 2.4 and 892,000 for Nick. In February, the networks both had a 2.7 demo rating, but Nick counted more of those viewers, 946,000 to 931,000.
