Nielsen Media Research named Susan D. Whiting its president and chief
operating officer Thursday, succeeding John A. Dimling, who is now chairman and
General manager in charge of national services and emerging markets since
1997, Whiting now reports to Dimling, who became the research firm's president
in 1993 and CEO in 1998.
Whiting joined Nielsen in 1978, rose to vice president two years later and
became senior vice president of marketing in 1983.
In a letter sent out to clients Thursday, Jerry Hobbs, chairman of Nielsen
parent VNU Inc., praised Dimling for having 'more than doubled revenues' and
built a new business in Internet research in his eight years of running
Dimling, in turn, lauded Whiting for having developed ratings services for
the cable industry since 1980. Nielsen now has 58 cable-network clients and
'hundreds of local cable customers,' he added.
