ABC’s Dancing with the Stars was the runaway leading broadcast hit this summer in seven major markets, according to Nielsen Media Research data released Thursday.
For the first time ever, using information gathered by “Local People Meters,” Nielsen released local demographic ratings for broadcast shows premiering during the summer. The new meters are in New York; Boston; Los Angeles; Chicago; San Francisco; Washington, D.C.; and Philadelphia.
LPMs now permit Nielsen to provide demographic data for these DMAs for shows that premiered in June -- something that wasn’t possible in prior years because June isn’t a so-called sweeps month, one of the four to seven times per year when local demographic data are recorded in paper diaries.
Nielsen released local demographics ratings for reality shows that included not only Dancing with the Stars but also Beauty & the Geek, Hell’s Kitchen, I Want to Be a Hilton and Rock Star: INXS.
In the seven markets, Dancing with the Stars was the highest-rated broadcast show among all adults 18 and older.
Next week, Nielsen plans to issue similar ratings for shows that premiered this summer on cable TV.
