Nielsen/NetRatings reported that the number of home broadband users
surpassed 21 million in November, while the amount of streaming activity nearly
doubled from November 2000's tally.
The ratings company said 12.7 million broadband Internet users accessed streaming media content
from home last month.
That was up 94 percent over November 2000's 6.6 million.
The number of home broadband users jumped
from 11.2 million last year to 21.3 million in November 2001.
Streaming rose marginally in narrowband homes, from 27.8 million last year to
28.1 million this year, Nielsen said.
'Broadband surfers tend to log onto the Internet more
often, stay online longer and are more likely to shop online than narrowband
surfers,' NetRatings director and principal analyst T.S. Kelly said in a
'Broadband is a main driver behind streaming media, with three out of every
five broadband users now accessing some form of online audio or video.'
