A bill to compel Cablevision Systems Corp. to add Yankees Entertainment &
Sports Network to its lineup in New Jersey has passed its first step in the
The New Jersey Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee approved
the measure Monday. The bill, staunchly opposed by Cablevision, would label the
operator's refusal to carry the pricey sports network as a violation of the
state's antitrust law.
Lawmakers apparently view Cablevision's refusal to carry the network -- which
cablecasts New York Yankees Major League Baseball and New Jersey Nets National
Basketball Association games -- as an issue of discrimination against a
programmer in which Cablevision has no financial interest.
The bill should go to the full Assembly next.
