Numericable Plugs in Casa’s CMTS

Numericable, France’s largest MSO, has picked Casa Systems C10G cable modem termination system (CMTS) to help fuel the deployment of VoIP services and high-speed Internet tiers that deliver speeds of more than 100 Mbps.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the selection is a potentially significant one for Casa, which has been methodically chipping away at the CMTS market. When factoring in its recent acquisition of Motorola Home, Arris accounted for 59% of CMTS port shipments in the fourth quarter of 2012, followed by Cisco (32%)  and Casa (9%), according to Infonetics.

Numericable, which also counts Cisco as a CMTS customer, operates systems that pass more than 9.8 million homes. Liberty Global, Shenzhen Topway Video Communication of China and Citycable of Switzerland are also among Casa's MSO customers.

The C10G is Casa’s flagship CMTS. The chassis can also support a new downstream module, the DS8X96, that gives the CMTS the ability to support the kind of densities envisioned by the budding Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP), a next-gen architecture that will combine the functions of the  CMTS and the edge QAM and put all of cable’s services on the same platform.

Last week, Casa announced the C100G, a new chassis that’s designed to support the specs of a fully integrated CCAP as well as a denser linecard that Casa expects to launch later this year. Casa is showing off that chassis at this week’s ANGA COM show in Cologne, Germany.

Casa “will be part of their [Numericable’s] CCAP rollout in the near future,” vendor founder and CEO Jerry Guo said, in a statement.

Casa, along with Arris, Cisco, CommScope and Harmonic, are among the vendors that will be pursuing the CCAP market as deployments start to ramp up later this year and accelerate in 2014. Multimedia Research Group believes the CCAP market will be worth more than $1 billion by 2017.
