of Justice 's Antitrust Division, succeeding Charles James, who resigned last

Pate will oversee the division's review of the pending merger between News
Corp. and DirecTV Inc. parent Hughes Electronics Corp.

Pate worked closely with Charles in deciding to block EchoStar Communications
Corp.'s bid to acquire Hughes last year.
