New York -- The prestigious George Foster Peabody Awards
plans to specifically honor excellence in health and medical programming on cable,
broadcast television and radio.

Effective with the 1998 awards year, those programs honored
with a Peabody Award will also be eligible for the new Peabody/Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation Award for meritorious health and medical programs or series.

The new awards are aimed at encouraging winners to continue
to produce medical and health-related programming, said Peabody Awards director Barry
Sherman.

The Peabody Awards have been administered for 57 years by
the University of Georgia's Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass
Communication.
