Pennsylvania Cable Network Launches Online Pay Service

The Pennsylvania Cable Network today launched an online, subscription-based service for the original shows that air on the network, while maintaining free streaming access to PCN's public-affairs programming such as state legislative sessions.

The cable-operator-supported channel said it was charging $24.99 for a one-year all-access pass (PCN Select) for streamed versions of PCN original shows, which include PCN Tours, PA Books, Journalist Roundtable and the network's call-in program. It also includes access to the popular weather program Weather World, which is produced by Penn State University.

Viewers who only want access to Weather World online can get that for $9.99 per year. And the network is offering a 24-hour viewing pass for PCN's live stream for $7.99.

MIchelle Harter, a PCN spokeswoman, said the intention is to generate revenue that will support the non-commercial station's investment in original programming.

The network streams legislative hearings and the like at pcntv.com. A promotional video on PCN Select can be seen in this Youtube link.

PCN's cable network is in 3.3 million cable homes in Pennsylvania.
