Playmakers Scores With AFI

ESPN has yet to make the call on a second season, but the American Film Institute gave its thumbs up to the controversial drama series Playmakers.

AFI ranked the series, which chronicled the on- and off-field activities of a fictional pro football team and has been widely criticized by the National Football League and its players association for its unrealistic portrayal of the gridiron realm, as one of the top 10 TV shows for 2003 in its third annual listing.
Other cable shows making the AFI list: HBO's six-hour miniseries, Angels in America; HBO's drug enforcement series The Wire; and FX's plastic surgeon skein, Nip/Tuck.
