‘POP’ Go Cable Positive, Rainbow

Cable Positive and Rainbow Media Holdings LLC want to “POP” AIDS.

The cable industry’s AIDS-action organization and the programmer will co-host the “Fifth Annual Cable Positive Positively Outstanding Programming Awards” Monday, June 5 at the IFC Center in New York.

The POP Awards recognize and honor exceptional original HIV/AIDS-related cable programming.

MTV led with seven POP Awards nominations, followed by Black Entertainment Television with six; VH1 with four; Logo and Viacom Inc. with three apiece; and one each for A&E Network, Discovery Channel and Discovery Times Channel.

Tickets are $250 each and can be purchased by contacting Cable Positive at 212-459-1504 or michelle@cablepositive.org (e-mail).

“Cable Positive is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing powerful and informative HIV/AIDS-related cable television as a means of empowering people and eliminating stigma in the fight against HIV/AIDS,” CEO Steve Villano said in a prepared statement. “We are fortunate to have Rainbow Media’s support as we continue this annual event to raise awareness for this epidemic.”

Rainbow CEO Josh Sapan added, “The POP Awards demonstrate the important role cable television is playing in promoting HIV prevention, raising AIDS awareness and reducing stigma and fear surrounding the disease. We are always looking for pro-social causes to help educate viewers through the powerful medium of TV.”
