The Federal Communications Commission will vote on broadcast-ownership rules
in early June, chairman Michael Powell said in an April 11 letter to Senate
Commerce Committee chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.).
Powell has come under pressure from Capitol Hill to postpone the planned June
2 vote and seek comment on new broadcast-ownership rules that the agency would
In the letter, Powell said he had no plans to postpone the "early June" vote
or to seek more public input on rule changes.
"I would highlight that the public interest is presently being ill-served by
a body of rules that have been severely wounded and rendered substantially
ineffective by withering judicial fire. Survival demands action," Powell said in
the two-page letter.
