Englewood, Colo. -- PrimeStar Inc. late last week confirmed
plans to lay off 275 people. The news was announced internally last Thursday. PrimeStar
spokesman John Beattie said the layoffs will occur over the next two months, and the
people affected have already been identified and notified.
No dollar figure for the severance packages had been given
at press time.
Beattie also confirmed that several key executives,
including senior vice presidents Denny Wilkinson and Joel Ginsparg, have chosen not to
make the move from Philadelphia to the new corporate headquarters here.
Beattie attributed the layoffs to a continuation of the
consolidation that began when PrimeStar rolled up from a partnership this past spring.
He added that Carl Vogel, the newly appointed chairman and
CEO, "came in and took a good, hard look at what we had to do in terms of
