National consumer-electronics retailer RadioShack Corp. said Wednesday that
it 'strongly supports the proposed merger between DirecTV [Inc.] and EchoStar
[Communications Corp.]' that is pending regulatory approval.
In a press release, the company cited increased competition, decreased
prices, improved customer service and increased product innovation as reasons to
support the merger.
RadioShack specifically mentioned the addition of local channels, more
high-definition television content and nationwide availability of high-speed
Internet access as benefits of the merger.
'A strong satellite industry is essential to enhancing competition in the
marketplace for multichannel-video and data services,' RadioShack chairman
Leonard Roberts said in the release. 'This merger will expand consumer choice
