RCN Is First TiVo MSO Partner To Launch Opera TV Store

Integration Of Online Storefront Paves Way For Hundreds Of Broadband-Delivered Apps

RCN is ready to sing Opera.

RCN, a competitive service provider that tangles with incumbent MSOs such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision Systems, has become the first pay-TV operator to launch the Opera TV Store on its MSO-supplied TiVo boxes, a move that will make way for hundreds of broadband-delivered video, music, gaming, and social media apps.

The Opera TV Store, delivered via the cloud using HTML5, features a slate of premium, over-the-top content and apps for a wide range of devices, including TiVo boxes and the company’s new “Roamio” product line.

Under the arrangement, RCN has access to the Opera TV Store backend system and the ability to manage and curate the apps it makes available to customers who are on its TiVo platform.

Although RCN is the first TiVo pay-TV partner to add the Opera TV Store, it likely won’t be the last. Other domestic MSOs with TiVo deals include Suddenlink Communications, Mediacom Communications, Grande Communications, Midcontinent Communications, GCI, and Atlantic Broadband, among others.

RCN said the Opera app platform will be available to all its TiVo-powered set-tops. Those already in the field will get access to the store via  broadband-delivered updates.
