Palo Alto, Calif. -- RealNetworks Inc. last week signed a
deal with Sun Microsystems Inc. that will put RealNetworks' streaming-video software
on Sun's Solaris-based and Enterprise servers.
The arrangement also includes Sun's Java media
framework, which may use RealNetworks' software as part of Tele-Communications
Inc.'s digital set-top platform. Last month, TCI selected Sun as a key technology
supplier for the 10 million digital set-tops that it will buy from NextLevel Systems Inc.
(soon to be renamed General Instrument Corp.).
In a press teleconference last week, Sun executives would
only say that 'with respect to TCI, there's a broad-based agreement that will
cover many Sun and Java technologies ... but we have no specific announcements [about
