RealNetworks Inc. has inked a development and distribution deal with Wavefly
Inc. with the hopes of thrusting its streaming-media platform from the PC to
televisions and stereos.
Under terms of the agreement, Wavefly will fuse the 'RealPlayer 8' platform
onto its fixed-wireless reference design and license the technology to
consumer-electronics manufacturers. The combined product will allow consumers to
stream Internet content from PCs to TVs and stereos.
While Internet-service providers handle the 'last mile' for content, the
Wavefly/RNI product will pave the 'last hundred feet' for the delivery of MP3
files, Internet radio programs and digital photos, the companies said.
Separately, RNI said it has named Larry Jacobson president and chief
operating officer. Jacobson, whose first day on the job is Feb. 12, most
recently held the same titles at Ticketmaster Corp., and he served as president
of Fox Television Network before that.
