National Religious Broadcasters is urging a key House member to change digital-television legislation in a manner that would expand cable’s requirement to carry local TV stations.

NRB said must-carry stations should receive automatic cable carriage in analog and digital until 2013 “at a minimum.” Cable, NRB added, should be required to carry all digital-programming streams of must-carry stations.

NRB president Frank Wright conveyed his goal in a June 10 letter to House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Joe Barton (R-Texas), who is hoping to enact a bill that ends broadcasters’ transition to digital no later than Dec. 31, 2008.
